Find the Right Riser Recliner Chair
A riser recliner should provide comfortable support while making it easier to sit down and stand up. However, different chairs can vary considerably in their size, shape, cushioning and movement. The best choice will depend on the user’s measurements, preferred sitting position and the features they find most useful.
At Coast Road Furniture, you can compare a range of British-made riser recliners from established manufacturers including Sherborne and Celebrity. Our team can explain the differences between the available models without rushing you into a decision.
How Does a Riser Recliner Chair Work?
A riser recliner uses an electrically powered mechanism to move the chair into different positions. When the rise function is activated, the seat moves gradually upwards and forwards, helping the user move towards a standing position. The chair can then be returned to its normal seating position and reclined for relaxation.
The handset is designed to keep the controls close at hand. The exact movements available will depend on whether the chair has a single, dual or multi-motor mechanism.
Single, Dual and Multi-Motor Riser Recliners
Single-motor riser recliners
A single-motor chair uses a coordinated reclining movement, with the backrest and footrest moving together. This provides straightforward operation and can be a good option for someone who prefers simple controls.
Dual-motor riser recliners
Dual-motor chairs allow the backrest and footrest to be adjusted more independently. This provides a wider choice of sitting and reclining positions, including the option to raise the feet while keeping the backrest relatively upright.
Multi-motor and Cloud Zero chairs
Selected models offer additional motors controlling features such as powered head support, lumbar adjustment or a more advanced reclining position. Our guide to tri-motor and Cloud Zero riser recliners explains these options in more detail.
Choosing the Correct Chair Size
Correct sizing is one of the most important parts of choosing a riser recliner. When sitting back in the chair, the user’s feet should be comfortably supported, while the seat should be wide enough without being unnecessarily spacious. Seat height, seat depth, back height and arm position can all affect comfort.
Many of our riser recliners are available in different sizes, including petite, small, standard and larger options. Trying the chair in person is the best way to compare these differences. You can also read our riser recliner buying guide for more general guidance.
Sherborne and Celebrity Riser Recliners
Our collection includes riser recliners from two respected British upholstery manufacturers.
Sherborne riser recliners are available across a choice of traditional and contemporary designs. Selected ranges offer different chair sizes, motor options and upholstery choices.
Celebrity riser recliners include supportive British-made chairs with a variety of back styles, sizes and reclining mechanisms. Selected models are also available with Cloud Zero and powered-adjustment features.
Fabric and Leather Options
Depending on the model, your riser recliner may be available in a wide selection of fabrics, colours and leather options. Some ranges also include specialist upholstery designed to be easier to clean or suitable for more demanding environments.
Our showroom team can show you the current swatches and help you compare the available covers. As colours can appear different on a screen, we recommend viewing the upholstery in person before placing an order whenever possible.

VAT Relief on Riser Recliner Chairs
Some customers with a qualifying long-term illness or disability may be eligible to purchase an appropriate riser recliner without paying VAT. Eligibility is based on the individual customer and the intended personal or domestic use of the chair; it does not apply automatically because of age.
Our team can explain the purchasing process, but customers are responsible for confirming that they meet the eligibility requirements. Further information is available through the official GOV.UK VAT-relief guidance.
Riser Recliner Chair FAQs
Can I try a riser recliner before buying?
Yes. We strongly recommend trying different chairs in our Connah’s Quay showroom so you can compare their size, support and movement. Home demonstrations may also be available for customers who cannot easily visit us.
Which motor type should I choose?
This depends on the amount of positional adjustment you want. A single-motor chair offers simple coordinated movement, while dual and multi-motor models provide greater independent adjustment. Trying the mechanisms is the best way to understand the differences.
Do riser recliners come in different sizes?
Yes. Many ranges are available in multiple sizes, which may include petite, small, standard, grande or royale options. The names and measurements vary between manufacturers, so the actual dimensions should always be checked.
Will you set up and demonstrate the chair?
Yes. Our free local delivery includes installation in your chosen room, setup and a demonstration of the chair’s controls. Packaging is removed for recycling.
Can you remove my existing chair?
Old furniture disposal may be available for a small additional charge. Please discuss this with us before delivery so that the necessary arrangements can be made.
