Why Buying a Safe, Compliant Mattress Matters More Than Ever

Why Mattress Safety Matters More Than Ever
When you buy a mattress, you expect it to be safe, compliant, and built to last. Unfortunately, recent industry research suggests that isn’t always the case.
A new investigation called Project Phoenix, carried out by the National Bed Federation and the European Bedding Industries’ Association, tested 101 mattresses being sold in the UK from both online marketplaces and traditional retailers. The findings were concerning: 65% of mattresses imported from outside the UK and EU failed to meet required fire safety standards.
For consumers, this highlights the importance of knowing where your mattress comes from - and who you’re buying it from.
What Did The Study Find?
The investigation examined mattresses sold across a range of retailers and price points, with products independently tested by accredited laboratories against UK fire safety regulations and product labelling requirements.
The results showed that many imported mattresses:
- Failed mandatory fire resistance testing
- Contained misleading or inaccurate product descriptions
- Had poor or missing textile composition labelling
- Raised concerns around foam fillings potentially not meeting UK regulations
In simple terms, some mattresses being sold online may not meet the same safety standards expected from reputable UK manufacturers and retailers.
Understanding UK Mattress Safety Standards
In the UK, mattresses must comply with strict regulations designed to protect consumers. These include the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations and BS 7177 testing standards.
To meet these standards, mattresses are tested for both:
- Smouldering ignition resistance
- Open flame ignition resistance
These rules exist for a reason, mattresses and upholstered products can significantly contribute to the spread of household fires if they are not manufactured correctly.
Why Buying From Trusted UK Retailers Matters
As an independent mattress retailer based in North Wales, we believe customers deserve transparency, quality, and peace of mind.
That’s why we work with trusted suppliers and manufacturers who understand UK compliance standards and invest in proper testing and certification.
While online marketplaces can sometimes appear cheaper, the latest industry findings are a reminder that price should never come at the expense of safety.
When purchasing a mattress, it’s always worth checking:
- Is the retailer reputable?
- Does the mattress comply with UK fire regulations?
- Are materials and fillings clearly labelled?
- Can the retailer provide guidance and aftercare?
A good mattress is an investment in your sleep, comfort, and wellbeing, but it should also be an investment in safety.
Supporting Responsible Retailers
The findings from Project Phoenix also highlight another issue facing the industry: responsible UK businesses are competing against products that may not meet the same legal standards.
Retailers and manufacturers who follow regulations invest heavily in product testing, quality materials, and compliance processes. Supporting trusted local and UK-based businesses helps encourage higher standards across the industry.
Don't Gamble
Buying a mattress should never feel like a gamble.
Recent testing carried out by leading bedding industry organisations shows that consumers need to be more cautious than ever when purchasing from unknown online sellers or overseas suppliers.
In our North Wales showrooms, we’re committed to offering mattresses that prioritise comfort, durability, and, most importantly - safety.
If you’d like advice on choosing the right mattress for your home, our team is always happy to help.
