What Our AIS Membership Means for Coast Road Furniture Customers

Posted by Tom Hughes on

When you shop with an independent furniture retailer, you might assume that larger national chains have an advantage when it comes to buying power, product choice and access to leading manufacturers. However, being independent doesn't necessarily mean standing alone.

Coast Road Furniture is a member of Associated Independent Stores (AIS), one of the UK's leading buying groups for independent retailers. Our membership allows us to benefit from the collective strength, knowledge and buying experience of a much larger organisation while remaining the independent, family-run furniture store our customers have known for generations.

But what does that actually mean when you're shopping for a new sofa, bed, carpet or dining set?

Independent Service with Greater Buying Strength

One of the biggest challenges facing any independent retailer is competing with the purchasing power of much larger national businesses.

A buying group such as AIS brings independent retailers together, helping members benefit from stronger relationships and buying arrangements with manufacturers and suppliers. For Coast Road Furniture, this gives us many of the advantages associated with being part of a much larger retail organisation without changing the way we run our own store.

We're still independently owned, and we still decide what goes onto our showroom floor. That means we're able to choose furniture and flooring that we believe represents good quality and value for our customers rather than simply stocking products because a national head office tells us to.

Access to Established Furniture and Flooring Suppliers

Furniture is a major part of AIS, alongside a dedicated flooring division, and membership helps independent retailers build relationships with suppliers from across the UK and beyond.

For our customers, this helps us maintain a broad choice across our main departments, whether you're looking for a new sofa or suite, bed or mattress, carpet, bedroom furniture or something new for your dining room.

It also gives our buying team opportunities to discover new products, compare ranges and keep up with developments across the furniture and flooring industries.

Helping Us Offer Better Value

Being part of a buying group isn't simply about finding the cheapest products. For us, value means finding the right balance between price, quality, comfort, design and durability.

Collective buying strength can help independent retailers negotiate competitive arrangements with suppliers. Combined with our own careful product selection, this helps us offer ranges that we believe provide genuine value for money.

That could mean a well-made British sofa designed to last for years, a supportive mattress from an established manufacturer or a carpet that provides the right combination of comfort and durability for a busy home.

We're then able to add the benefits of shopping locally, including the opportunity to see and try products in person and speak to an experienced member of our team before making a decision.

Keeping Up with New Products and Trends

The furniture industry never stands still. New fabrics, colours, comfort technologies, mattress fillings, recliner mechanisms and flooring styles are continually being introduced.

AIS members have access to specialist buying expertise, industry information and trade events, including the INDX series of buying shows. These bring retailers and manufacturers together and provide opportunities to see new collections and upcoming trends.

For Coast Road Furniture, this is another useful way of identifying products that might deserve a place in our Connah's Quay showroom. We don't need to follow every passing trend, but it's important that we're aware of what's changing and what manufacturers are introducing.

Still Proudly Independent

Perhaps the most important point about our AIS membership is what it doesn't change.

Coast Road Furniture remains an independent furniture retailer. We choose the products we sell, set our own priorities and look after our customers locally.

That independence allows us to offer a more personal approach. You can visit our showroom, compare different products and speak to people who understand the furniture we sell. We can also provide practical advice based on your room, requirements and budget rather than relying solely on information on a screen.

Our local service continues after you've made your choice too, with free local delivery and furniture setup available across our delivery area, including assembly where required and removal of packaging as part of our service.

The Best of Both Worlds for Our Customers

AIS is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026, and throughout that time its focus has remained on supporting independent retailers while allowing them to retain their individual identity.

That's why membership makes sense for Coast Road Furniture.

It allows us to benefit from the buying strength, supplier relationships and industry knowledge of a much larger organisation while continuing to offer the independence and personal service of a local family furniture store.

Ultimately, our customers don't need to know the details of how a buying group works. What matters is the result: greater choice, competitive value, access to established manufacturers and the personal service you'd expect from an independent retailer.
