What Is a Zip and Link Mattress? Benefits, Sizes and Buying Advice
Posted by Tom Hughes on
A zip and link mattress consists of two separate mattresses that zip together to form one larger bed. It gives you the flexibility to use the mattresses together or separately, making it a useful option for guest bedrooms and homes where sleeping arrangements sometimes change.
At Coast Road Furniture in Connah’s Quay, most of our mattress ranges are available in a zip and link format. Harrison Spinks is a particularly popular choice, with options also available from Espoir, Sealy, Hamilton & James and Highgrove.

Why Choose a Zip and Link Mattress?
The flexibility to separate your bed
In our experience, the main reason customers choose zip and link is the ability to separate the mattresses. A guest room, for example, might need to accommodate a couple on one occasion and two people who want individual beds on another.
If you plan to use the bed this way, the bases need to work as two separate beds too. We can help you choose a suitable arrangement and check the dimensions before you order.
More manageable mattress care
A large mattress can be awkward to turn or rotate. With a matching zip and link pair, each half weighs approximately half as much as the equivalent complete mattress, making the individual sections easier to handle.
There is a practical trade-off: zipping and unzipping the mattresses can be fiddly. We would not describe it as effortless, but handling two smaller sections can be more manageable than moving one large mattress. Always follow the care instructions for your particular model and get help when needed.
Different comfort preferences
Zip and link can also give couples the option of different firmness levels. Our Harrison Spinks models can be ordered in zip and link format with any of their available firmness combinations, so both sleepers can choose the feel they prefer.
Where a one-piece split tension option is unavailable, it may also be possible to link two different mattress models. This needs checking before ordering: the mattress heights and zip positions must be compatible. Our team can explain which combinations are suitable.
What Sizes Are Zip and Link Mattresses Available In?
We supply zip and link mattresses almost entirely in king size and super king size. Smaller sizes are usually less practical because each separate sleeping section becomes quite narrow.
A super king zip and link pair is not the same as two standard single mattresses. Each half is approximately 90cm wide and 200cm long, forming a combined sleeping surface of approximately 180 × 200cm. A standard UK single mattress is normally 90 × 190cm.
That extra length matters when the bed is separated. You will need appropriately sized bases and bedding, rather than assuming standard single sizes will fit. Check the exact measurements of your chosen model before purchasing either.

Can You Feel the Join in the Middle?
Yes, you can feel the centre join. Although the zip is usually recessed below the level of the mattress top, the sleeping surface still consists of two separate mattresses.
This is worth considering if you regularly sleep across the middle of the bed. The flexibility of separating the mattresses may be your priority, but it is important to understand how the construction differs from a one-piece mattress.
Zip and Link or Split Tension: What Is the Difference?
A zip and link mattress is made in two separate sections that can be unzipped. The two sections can have matching firmness levels or different ones, depending on the range.
A one-piece split tension mattress has different firmness levels built into either side of a single mattress. It cannot be separated into two beds.
If your main aim is different firmness levels, both options may be worth discussing. If you also want to separate the bed, zip and link provides that flexibility. Read our guide to split tension mattresses for more about choosing different comfort levels within one mattress.
What Bedding Should You Use?
When the mattresses are joined, customers usually use one king or super king fitted sheet covering the pair, according to the combined bed size.
When used separately, each mattress needs its own correctly sized sheet. For a separated super king pair, remember to look for sheets suitable for 200cm-long mattresses and check that the sheet depth suits your chosen model.
Does Zip and Link Cost More or Take Longer?
There is usually a modest extra charge compared with the equivalent one-piece mattress. In our experience, the premium is rarely more than around 10%, although the exact difference depends on the manufacturer and model.
Lead times are usually similar to those for the standard version. We will confirm the price, specification and expected delivery time for your chosen combination before you order.
