Meet Hamilton & James: British Craftsmanship Behind Our Majestic Beds

Posted by Andy Hughes on

What goes into a well-made bed? With Hamilton & James, the story begins in the Yorkshire Pennines, where mattresses, divan bases and headboards are made to order. This family-run manufacturer traces its bed-making history back to the mid-1990s, combining traditional skills with modern manufacturing methods.

At Coast Road Furniture, our Hamilton & James selection includes the Majestic 4500, Majestic 5500 and Majestic 9000. Here is a little more about the manufacturer behind them.

Traditional skills beneath the surface

Some of the most interesting details are hidden beneath the mattress cover. Hamilton & James uses traditional hand side stitching: a skilled, labour-intensive process that the manufacturer says takes years to master. It is a reminder that there is more to making a mattress than choosing its fillings and adding a cover.

Natural fillings and a choice of feel

The Majestic range combines pocket springs with a blend of cotton, wool, silk, cashmere and soft white fibres. These layers bring together cushioning and breathability, with natural materials forming an important part of the mattress construction.

The three models also offer different starting points for comfort. Hamilton & James describes the Majestic 4500 as having a softer feel, using a 1,000-spring core. The Majestic 5500 and 9000 use a 2,000-spring core alongside tablet springs for a firmer feel. The Majestic is also a two-sided mattress range. Those differences make it worth comparing the models by feel, rather than choosing purely by the number in the name.

A bed with your own finishing touches

Their beds offer plenty of scope for personalisation. The wider collection includes drawer and ottoman storage bases, winged and simpler headboard designs, and shallow bases raised on legs for easier cleaning underneath. Fabric choices range from textured bouclé to rich velvet, helping the finished bed suit your bedroom as well as your comfort preferences.

Making better use of materials

There are thoughtful details in the factory too. Hamilton & James describes reusing suitable production waste as mattress border protectors and straps to secure bases and ottoman lids during transport. It is a practical example of finding another use for materials left over from making beds.
