Why Shoppers Are Choosing Independent Furniture Shops
Posted by Tom Hughes on
Time to browse, advice when you need it, and people who remember you when you return. These are familiar parts of shopping with an independent furniture shop, and new research suggests they continue to matter to customers.
A survey of 2,000 UK adults commissioned by Associated Independent Stores (AIS), reported in October 2026, found that 75% of consumers had shopped at independent stores as much as, or more than, over the previous year. Looking ahead, 39% expected their spending at independent furniture and homewares stores to increase over the following year.
The research highlighted supporting the local community, better customer service and distinctive products as reasons for choosing independent retailers. At Coast Road Furniture and Prestatyn Furniture, much of that reflects what we hear from customers every day.
Space to Browse at Your Own Pace
Buying furniture often takes a little time. You might be gathering ideas, comparing colours or working out whether you want a complete change. Sometimes you simply want to look around before having a conversation.
We understand that. We are not a pushy kind of store. Customers regularly tell us they appreciate being left to browse, and we are happy to give people the space to explore before offering assistance if required.
With plenty to see across our departments, there is no need to arrive with a finished shopping list. You are welcome to look, try a few things and ask questions as they come up.

Advice That Helps You Work Out What Suits You
Researching furniture online can be useful, but it can also leave you convinced that you need a particular feature before you have had the chance to try it.
Mattresses are a good example. Customers sometimes arrive asking specifically for memory foam because they have seen it advertised and discussed so often online. After trying different models and talking through the advantages and drawbacks, it is not uncommon for them to discover that another type feels more comfortable.
Memory foam will suit some people very well. The value of visiting a showroom is having the opportunity to compare it with other options and make a choice based on your own experience.
The same applies to sofas and chairs. Seat height, depth, cushioning and support can be difficult to judge from a photograph. Our sofa buying guide explains some of the practical details worth considering before making your decision.
Experience Behind the Advice
At our Connah’s Quay store, every member of our current sales team has more than 20 years’ experience. Many have been with us for a long time, and we are fortunate to have that depth of knowledge available to customers.
That experience helps when discussing everyday questions: how different mattresses feel, which sofa proportions might suit a room, or what to consider when choosing furniture that will be used every day.
It also means customers returning after several years will often find familiar faces. For a family business that has been serving the area since 1972, those lasting relationships are an important part of how we work.
Recommendations That Travel Between Neighbours
A large part of our business comes from repeat customers and recommendations from family and friends. One explanation we hear particularly often from new customers is that a neighbour suggested visiting us.
Furniture is a purchase people live with for years, so a recommendation from someone who has already bought from a shop can carry real weight. They can speak about the whole experience, from choosing their furniture to having it delivered and set up.
We appreciate those recommendations. Every time a customer sends a friend, relative or neighbour our way, they are trusting us to look after someone they know.
More Choice Than You Might Expect
One misconception we sometimes encounter is that an established independent furniture shop will mainly sell traditional styles or furniture aimed at older customers.
Traditional furniture certainly has its place, but our choice extends much further. We have access to a wide range of manufacturers and styles, including contemporary designs, modern upholstery and furniture for different homes and stages of life.
Our membership of Associated Independent Stores (AIS) helps us discover ranges and work with suppliers across the furniture and flooring industries. It gives us access to extensive choice while allowing us to select what we believe will suit our customers.
You can read more about what our AIS membership means for customers. If you have a particular look in mind, ask us: the options available to order extend beyond what we can fit on the showroom floor.

Service That Continues on Delivery Day
The shopping experience continues after you have chosen your furniture. Getting it into the right room, assembling it and clearing away the packaging all make a difference to how smoothly a purchase goes.
We offer free local furniture delivery and setup, including assembly where required and removal of packaging. You can find out more in our article about the benefits of free delivery and assembly from your local furniture shop.
When comparing furniture, it is worth considering the complete service alongside the product and its price.
