Are Mattresses Still Made in Britain? Every One of Ours Is

Posted by Tom Hughes on

“We thought everything was made abroad these days.” It is something we hear surprisingly often when customers discover where our mattresses come from.

The answer is straightforward: every mattress we sell at Coast Road Furniture and Prestatyn Furniture is made in Britain. That includes our affordable everyday mattresses as well as our more luxurious models. Buying British does not have to mean choosing the most expensive mattress in the showroom.

Where are our mattresses made?

Many of our suppliers manufacture in and around Batley, near Leeds. This part of West Yorkshire is a mattress-making hotspot, with a strong concentration of bed manufacturers, the most well known including Highgrove and Dura Beds.

Harrison Spinks makes its mattresses in Leeds, while Sealy manufactures in Aspatria, Cumbria. So, although a brand may be known internationally, the mattress you buy from us can still be manufactured here in Britain.

A recent industry article on the UK mattress market highlighted the growing share supplied by imports. British mattress manufacturing nevertheless remains very much alive, and it supplies our entire mattress range.

Does a British-made mattress cost more?

British-made mattresses are available across a wide range of budgets. You do not need to spend premium money simply to buy one made here.

For a double mattress, we broadly divide our range into three price bands:

Prices can change, but the point remains: every one of these mattresses is British-made. Differences in price reflect factors such as construction, fillings, finish and brand - not simply the country of manufacture.

Our guide to how much you should spend on a mattress explains what you might notice as you move between budgets.

Harrison Spinks: from Yorkshire farm to mattress factory

Harrison Spinks offers a particularly interesting example of what happens before a finished mattress reaches our showroom.

The company makes its own springs, drawing wire and forming it into its spring systems. It also grows hemp and flax on its own Yorkshire farm, providing some of the natural fibres used in its mattress fillings. Filling fibres are processed and blended into pads at its Leeds factory.

This does not mean every ingredient comes from the farm. Different mattresses use different combinations of materials, including fibres sourced elsewhere. It does show how much of the manufacturing process can take place within Britain, beyond assembling the finished mattress.

Made to order - and not always in a standard size

Our mattress models are made to order. For certain manufacturers, turnaround can be as quick as a few days; others take longer. We can confirm the current timescale for your chosen mattress when you order.

Working directly with manufacturers also gives us flexibility. All our mattress suppliers offer bespoke sizing options for mattresses and beds, with availability depending on the particular model and construction.

If you have an unusually sized bed frame or need a different width or length, ask us before assuming you must replace the whole bed. We can discuss your measurements with the manufacturer and establish what can be made, the price and the likely lead time.

British-made is a good starting point but comfort still matters

Knowing where your mattress was made is useful, but it cannot tell you whether you will find it comfortable. Spring systems, fillings and the overall feel vary considerably, even between mattresses made by the same manufacturer.

Our advice is to set a budget and try a few different options. Spend more if you can feel a worthwhile improvement, rather than because you think British manufacture must come with a premium price.

Visit Coast Road Furniture in Connah’s Quay or Prestatyn Furniture to compare mattresses and talk through your requirements. We offer free local delivery and an optional old-mattress uplift and disposal service when your new mattress is delivered.

Whichever mattress you choose from us, you can be confident that it was made in Britain.
