Are Mattress Sleep Trials Worth It? The Pros and Cons

Mattress sleep trials have become increasingly popular, particularly with mattresses bought online. Being able to sleep on a mattress at home for 60, 100 or even more nights can sound like a risk-free way to find the right one - but is a sleep trial always as straightforward as it appears?

At Coast Road Furniture, we do not currently offer a mattress sleep trial. We found that operating one added too much to the cost, with the expense of collections, exchanges and returned mattresses ultimately needing to be covered somewhere. However, we understand why trials appeal to customers, and they can be valuable in the right circumstances.

What is a mattress sleep trial?

A mattress sleep trial gives you a set period in which to use a new mattress at home. If it does not suit you, the retailer may offer a refund, an exchange or credit towards a different mattress.

The important word is may. A sleep trial and a comfort exchange are not necessarily the same thing. Some schemes provide a full refund, while others only allow one exchange. Conditions can also include buying a mattress protector, keeping the mattress for a minimum period or paying collection and re-delivery charges.

What are the advantages?

You can assess the mattress properly at home

A few minutes lying on a mattress cannot reproduce several full nights of sleep. A home trial lets you judge pressure relief, temperature, movement and how you feel in the morning.

It allows time for adjustment

A new mattress can initially feel different from an old, softened one. Your body may need time to adjust, while the upholstery in the mattress will also begin to settle through normal use. A sensible trial period prevents customers from judging the mattress after only one or two nights.

It reduces the risk of buying online

A sleep trial is particularly helpful when buying a mattress you have never tried. Descriptions such as soft, medium and firm are useful, but comfort is subjective and firmness ratings are not completely standardised between manufacturers.

What are the possible disadvantages?

The terms may be more restrictive than expected

The number of nights is only part of the offer. Before buying, check whether you will receive a refund or an exchange, whether collection is free and whether a mattress protector is compulsory. Some trials also require you to keep the mattress for a minimum number of nights before requesting a return.

An exchange might not be entirely free

You may need to pay the difference if the replacement mattress is more expensive. Collection, administration or redelivery charges can sometimes apply too. If the replacement costs less, do not assume that the difference will automatically be refunded.

The cost has to be accounted for

Collecting and processing used mattresses is expensive. Some may be donated or recycled where suitable, but others cannot be returned to normal stock. Although there may not be a separate “sleep trial charge”, the cost of running the scheme forms part of the retailer’s overall business costs.

This does not make sleep trials bad value. For some customers, the additional reassurance is worth paying for. It simply means the trial should be considered alongside the mattress quality, total price and service provided.

Is trying a mattress in a showroom better?

Showroom testing and home trials offer different advantages. A home trial gives you more time, but visiting a showroom allows you to compare numerous mattresses, spring systems and firmness levels side by side before spending anything.

An experienced adviser can also ask about your sleeping position, preferred feel, current mattress and any significant difference in comfort preference between two sleepers. This can help narrow down the most suitable options rather than relying on a firmness description alone.

We never claim that a short showroom test guarantees perfect comfort, but careful comparisons and knowledgeable advice can substantially reduce the likelihood of choosing the wrong mattress.

Questions to ask before accepting a sleep trial

• Does the trial provide a refund, exchange or store credit?
• Is there a minimum number of nights before I can make a claim?
• Do I need to purchase and use a particular mattress protector?
• Are collection or redelivery charges payable?
• Can I exchange the mattress more than once?
• What happens if the replacement costs more or less?
• Which marks, damage or signs of misuse would invalidate the trial?

Our honest view

A genuine, clearly explained sleep trial can provide worthwhile reassurance, especially when purchasing an unfamiliar mattress online. However, a conditional comfort exchange should not automatically be treated as a completely risk-free trial.

Compare the full terms, mattress quality, total price and available advice, not simply which retailer advertises the greatest number of nights. For many customers, trying several mattresses in a proper showroom remains an effective way to make a more informed choice without building the cost of a trial scheme into the purchase.
