Will a Chesterfield Sofa Fit Through My Door?

Chesterfield sofas are loved for their deep buttoning, traditional rolled arms and substantial appearance. However, those same features can make them more difficult to deliver than a conventional sofa.

Before ordering a Chesterfield sofa, it is important to check the complete route into your living room - not simply the width of your front door.

Why can Chesterfield sofas be difficult to deliver?

A traditional Chesterfield often has wide, rounded arms and a deep, solid frame. Although a sofa may fit through an individual doorway, the delivery team might still need enough space to turn it, tilt it or stand it upright.

Problems commonly arise in narrow hallways, porches, stairwells and entrances with tight corners. Low ceilings, radiators, bannisters and doors that do not open fully can reduce the available turning space even further.

A straight carry from the front door into the room is normally much easier. Access through wide patio or double doors can also make a considerable difference.

Measure the entire delivery route

When checking access, measure every part of the journey from the delivery vehicle to the sofa’s final position. This should include:

• The clear width and height of the front door with it fully open.
• Porches, gates and external steps.
• The narrowest points in hallways and corridors.
• Any corners the sofa must turn around.
• Internal doorways and the direction in which their doors open.
• Ceiling height where the sofa may need to be stood upright.
• Radiators, bannisters, light fittings and other fixed obstacles.

Remember that the smallest measurement is not always the deciding factor. A sofa might pass through a doorway on its side but still require considerable space on the other side to turn towards the room.
